Tom Brady's Performance Misdiagnosed?
Posted by GI Monitor
Yesterday, I was following the NFL games on my iPhone while I attended the Patients 2.0 session at this year’s Health 2.0 Conference. When I read the news that Patriots quarterback Tom Brady threw 4 interceptions, I immediately thought that he had a terrible game and made some bad decisions.
In my hotel room later last night, I was able to watch the highlights of the game and get some context. First, the game was a shootout and Brady was forced to throw the ball often. Secondly, defenders tipped 2 of his interceptions.
Since I’m at the Health 2.0 Conference, I couldn’t help but think of Brady’s interception diagnosis as an analogy for patient diagnoses. If a coach only knew that Brady threw 4 interceptions, he might work on some drills to improve Brady’s decision-making or passing accuracy. Once armed with the full narrative and some context, Bill Belichick (one of the best NFL coaches of all time), will likely work on his blocking schemes to keep defenders hands out of the passing lanes and he'll also spend some time on improving his defense so Brady isn’t forced to throw as much.
Simple analogy for a simple problem. Doctors need the full narrative to make accurate diagnoses and treatment decisions. Its not enough to have biometrics. Those data need to be accompanied by subjective data and a full patient narrative.
